Passion Sunday 2019

“If you love me then you will keep my commandments.” “If I say the truth to you, why do you not believe me? If you were of God then you would hear the words of God but you are not of God and so you do not hear them. These premises are eternal and the consequences are eternal and follow a pattern that God established with Israel: Truth shared increases the unity between the God Who reveals the truth and the soul that listens to the truth. It is a study and meditation on the very nature of the Trinity.

The greater the truth I can share with you through preaching or writing or acting the greater the union our souls will experience. Sometimes a holy book such as the Imitation of Christ will excite the soul because of the truth so simply presented. Consider the meditation upon the Passion of Christ in the Gospels. Great saints have changed their lives because of the Truth they found in their prayer. So we must reflect and meditate up the source of this power which in the end will conquer the world.

In the first place the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are bound in a deep and abiding unity founded in the very nature of God: i.e. Love. Love is the perfection of the Truth and expresses itself in fecundity. “Be fruitful and multiply” is the first commandment of God to His Creation. God follows that law of love and poured Himself out in love by Creation. This is followed by a second outpouring which is the Revelation of His Word. Finally, He poured Himself out in the Incarnation, the Word became Flesh. If we are created in the image of God, then we too must have an outpouring.

Our pouring of ourselves comes in the manner in which we speak and act. Examine your conversations. Are they focused upon the secular or do you seek the sacred? Do you study and pray over the word of God? What thoughts do you ponder when you have silence in your day? Ultimately, we are created for God and to be happy with Him for all eternity. It begins right now. Challenge yourself to read and pray over the Passion. Come to desire to suffer for the salvation of souls. Be a true Victim in imitation of Christ’s sacrifice to ransom your soul. Follow the pattern of our Lady and purify your soul to give birth to the Word made Flesh in your body. You too are a temple of the Holy Ghost. You too are called to transform the world in love. Refrain from bitterness and claim the joy which places Jesus first in your life, others are second and yourself = you are third.

“If you love me, then you will keep my commandments.” These premises found today have consequences. We either belong to God because we hear His Word today and are nourished by it. Or we do not hear and are not aflame with love for the Holy Trinity and are thrown into the fire of hatred and sin. Our world today is seeking to destroy the presence of the Word made flesh but one word of His Truth outweighs the whole world. Greater is He who presents this word of Truth to us than he who is in the world seeking to destroy the souls created in the image of God.

Let us truly embrace the glory that Jesus sought: the Cross. Let our wills be joined to His as He hung there in reparation for our lack of faith. Let our daily desire be to unite with our Lady to save as many souls as we can. Pray more and more the holy rosary with the Word of God open before our eyes and consume the Bread of Life for the incorporation deeply in the Mystical Body formed on the Cross for the salvation of all who will listen. “Father, forgive them they know not what they do.” God bless you all and grant you a love of the holy Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In the hearts of Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

Fr. Richard Voigt, S.D.B.
