Litany of the Saints Gregorian
A litany is a repetitive prayer form, usually characterized by the announcement of varying invocations (e.g. lists of divine titles, names of saints) or supplications by a Priest, each of which is followed by a fixed congregational response.
Examples of such responses are “Lord have mercy,” “Pray for us,” or “Amen.” Litanies may be distinguished from other responsorial forms by their relative brevity.
This beautiful Gregorian Litany is a prayer which invokes the Holy Saints of Holy Mother Church. The Litany of the Saints is the oldest approved Litany of the Church. It is believed to have originated around A.D. 595, and was used by Pope St. Gregory the Great. The Traditional Latin Mass sings this Litany on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter, to implore the intercession of the Church Triumphant [those in Heaven]. Thus, it is an integral part of the Lenten Season.
Martyrs, Virgins, Doctors of the Church and other Saints, and especially the Virgin Mary are invoked to bless the faithful on the eve of Easter, during ordinations and on Rogation days. The Saint Joseph Daily Missal of 1957 tells us, “The Faithful who recite this Litany may gain an indulgence of 5 years. A plenary indulgence once a month may be obtained [with Confession, Communion, and the Intentions of the Holy Father] when this Litany is recited daily for one month.” The Church Militant, here on Earth, needs the prayers and assistance of the Saints in Heaven more than ever in these troubled times. Invoke the Saints, and they will pray for you.
