First Sunday of Advent 2020

The Future of Futility.

“This world is futile” remarks St. Paul to each and every Christian. This world was tainted in the sin that brought death to Adam and Eve. That same sin caused the earth to rebel against man in proportion to man’s rebellion against God. As sin causes death to each child born unto woman so sin strikes at the foundation of earth. Our earth will be finished at the time in which our Lord returns. When our Lord returns there will be signs in the sun, the moon and the stars.

Certainly, this reminds us that Jesus came first in humility and poverty. When He returns the only light will be that which radiates from His person. There will be no more need of a sun, a moon or stars for all will be wrapped in the Light of Divinity. He will come in power and glory and men will surely be mourning and lamenting that they paid His Words no heed. Men will find that their imagined power and strength simply evaporates in the glorified Christ.

What will we do as children of our Lady? Look up and lift up your heart and soul for the moment of the general judgment has come upon all creatures. Now the perfect order of God’s reign will dominate all that He has called into existence. Every sacrifice you have offered for the salvation of a soul now becomes part of your eternal heritage. Those souls who owe their eternal life to you will fill you with so much love you will hardly be able to contain it, if you were to remain simply an earthly creature. No, you have been changed and your eternal summertime is now upon you.

Consider the fruit trees here on earth when you see the buds blooming and the fruit beginning to grow you are sure that summer is here. Just so when the warmth of our love burns within us the fruit of that love is approaching its perfection. As fruit gives us delicious flavors so too the fruit of our lives gives to other souls a delightful taste. Nothing can spoil eternal fruit picked from the truly Christian soul.

Our joy is to be with one another sharing the good that God, the master Gardener, has produced in our lives. Ultimately the fruit of the Cross absorbs all others in a love that cannot be measured in human temporal terms. We must expand our thoughts to go beyond earthly reality into the realm of the supernatural. All that is supernatural delights the entire person and we experience a foretaste of that delight in the child of promise, Jesus.

Yes, this first Sunday of Advent is calling us to recognize that in God there is no past, present or future instead all is eternal. At each holy mass we step out of time and into eternity. In his weakness as a child, we are able to reach out and embrace Him in our hearts but when He comes in glory and power, He will embrace us who love Him. Prepare your hearts for this moment to form a cradle for Him now. Prayer lifts up the heart and prepares a worthy dwelling place for the King of kings. He delights in sharing His mother with us and we love to pray the most holy rosary to realize a scent of holiness within this earthly temple. All is possible for those who love Him and nothing is impossible if we have faith.

With all the saints of heaven we cry out “Come, Lord Jesus, come!” Our expectation and our sacrifices will prepare the way of the Lord and will allow us to enter into the Holy Family. What a gift we shall receive if we prepare well for Christmas 2020. Let nothing distract us from penetrating the mystery of our Lord’s Incarnation. Pray, fast and give alms to those in need then your needs will be fulfilled by the One Who holds you in His Heart.

In the hearts of Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

Fr. Voigt
