Low Sunday 2020

Daily we are being bombarded by “fake” news and fear mongering so that our minds and hearts question and ask, “Who can I trust? Where can I find the Truth? In substance we are looking into the credibility of the news and the honesty of our elected officials. Credibility is the key to human society. If I can believe you, then we can enter into a relationship.

Recall that our Lord three times told the apostles that He would suffer, die and rise again on the third day. Did they believe Him? Even when He was ascending to the Father some doubted. Is our Lord to be trusted? Are His words to us truthful or not? One is credible when the words he utters match the deeds he performs. Men by nature want to be believed even when they lie. With their active imagination kids come up with the wildest stories and want mom to believe every word they speak. Man’s credibility is suspect when a lie is detected but can God lie?

Is the credibility of God to be trusted? We answer that God alone is perfectly credible. He alone speaks the absolute truth. As Jesus fulfilled all that was prophesied about Him, He takes all His Words seriously. He speaks and it occurs; He cleanses the leper with a single word. Now He comes to His apostles less Thomas and He breathes upon them uttering the words that institute the
power of forgiveness. “Whose sins you shall forgive; they are forgiven and whose sins you retain; they are retained.”

How is that possible? Through the shedding of His precious Blood He has purchased the divine power for His apostles and all the priests that come after them. Thomas would not believe unless he could place his fingers into the wounds of the hands and the feet; he went further to say that he wished to place his hand into the opened side of the Savior. Now Jesus stood before him and extended His Hands and called upon Thomas to place his fingers into his wounds and his hand into His Side and be not unbelieving but believe. It was a credibility test and Jesus passed it with flying colors.

The eternal freshness of the wounds of Jesus bespeak the truth of the very nature of God Who so loved the world that He gave us His Only-Begotten Son that whosoever believe in Him shall not perish. God’s Love is proven through the sacrifice of the Son. His actions compel us to believe all His Words to us. With St. Thomas we say “My Lord and My God’.

We cannot believe the “fake” news nor the dishonest politician but we can trust the eternal truths which Truth Himself has revealed to us. In that trust we turn to the Woman who received us as sons and daughters, we ask our dear Mother to aid us as we walk over the waves of this world. If we are to survive and enter the kingdom of God then we must follow her tender guidance. Pray the rosary more and more that this world may not consume us but rather assure us that whatever we endure will be for our salvation and sanctification.

Believe in Jesus,

In the hearts of Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

Fr. Voigt
